Confidentiality Law November 12, 2008

During a recent discussion on YMX, I was challenged to do a little research on confidentiality law and how it applies to youth workers.  Each state is different, but generally you are required to report the following to the local authorities:

Suspected child abuse
Suspected child neglect
Suicide threats

Remember that each state is different and the above is just a generality.  Here is an interesting article on the differences of what could be considered confidentiality and what may not be.  It’s worth the read!  Be sure you brush up on what your state requires you to report.

For discussion: What kind of information do you feel you need to pass on to parents when a student comes to talk to you privately?
